Language Arts for 5th grade December 9th-13th
What’s Happening in Class?

·         Bible:  This week students have different verses from Luke 2:1-14. Each student was assigned 2 or three verses according to the table that they sit at during Bible. Each student was given a copy of the passage with their verses for memorization highlighted in pink.

·         Reading: We have temporarily put aside Crispin for the rest of Christmas season. We are currently reading Christmas short stories for reading time. These stories are used to help inspire and influence the Christmas narratives written by the students during Writer’s Workshop.

·         Language Arts: This week during Writer’s Workshop students will be working on a personal Christmas narrative. This writing assignment should be at least 300 words in length. It will be due this Friday. Students are being given time in the afternoons to work on this assignment; they should be able to complete this writing in class by Friday. They are allowed to bring it home to type, but this is not required. If you are helping correct and edit your student’s writing, please feel free to show them errors in grammar and punctuation, but please do not revise the piece in terms of wording and content. In other words, I should still be able to hear the student’s individual voice in their writing.

·         Spelling and Vocabulary:  Wordly Wise lesson 7 exercises A, B, and C will be due on Wednesday, December 11th. The test for Wordly Wise will be next week on December 18th.  Spelling homework and words 3x each will be due on December 11th we will also have our test for spelling on this day.

Boys Science: As we continue our study on electricity and magnetism, the boys’ science class has been offered an opportunity for extra credit. I will average in an extra test grade this quarter for those who wish to build a closed electric circuit and explain how it works to the rest of the class. The directions for this project can be found on pages 188-189 of the textbook and the worksheet to complete is found on pages 117-118 in the workbook. This extra credit is due by Thursday, December 12th.

·         Christmas celebrations!

We will also have our class Christmas party on December 20th. In the days to come there will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board outside our classroom door.  We will also do a Secret Santa gift exchange. Girls will draw for another girl’s name and the boys draw another boy’s name. Please keep gifts for the exchange under $5.00. We will be exchanging gifts at the class party on the 20th. Please have your student bring their gift by December 19th.
