Update for Parents regarding Language Arts
Over the past month the students and I have been working on various topics from the Write Source grammar book regarding improving our writing and proper formatting of formal writing. The following is a quick list of the topics and page numbers from the book that we have covered. I am sending this list to you and the students as a reference to continue to assist them with their reports on the Canadian provinces and as a reminder of my expectations with which to format their papers.

· Constructing Strong paragraphs--- pages 523-533
· Research Writing/Building Skills--- pages 363-376
· Research Writing/Summary Paragraphs--- pages 377-380
Mrs. West and I have combined this assignment for Social Studies and Language Arts in an effort to minimize the work load for the students by, “killing two birds with one stone,” so to speak. Therefore, this assignment will receive a grade for both social studies and grammar/writing. I will be grading the more technical elements of the report.
If you look at your student’s Write Source book, you may notice the chapter on “Summary Paragraphs” is followed by a chapter on “Research Reports,” I am not requiring this to be a formal research paper, as we have not yet covered this material. My expectations for this report are: it will be three summary paragraphs about the three topics that the student has chosen to cover in their report, it will have an introduction to their paragraphs, and it will have a conclusion.
