Schedule for the Day
7:20am Meet in the fifth and sixth grade hall
7:30am Bus and van leave for Mt St Helens
9:30-9:45am arrive at Johnston Ridge Observatory
*Upon arrival we will wait on the van and bus until a park ranger comes to give us direction for the day.
9:50-10:00am Bathroom break just inside the observatory
10:00am Toward the back of the observatory there is a movie theatre. Two movies are presented, one starts on the hour and the other on the half hour. I would like for us to make the 10:00 am and 10:30 movie if possible. If I see that we can’t make the movie at that time, we will adjust by looking through the exhibits in the observatory until 10:30am and then we will watch the 10:30 and 11:00am movie. If we have to wait, you can take your group around to the different stations and to read and explore the information provided.
11:10 Ranger Talk- Place-TBA
11:40-12:30 Explore Exhibits and Trail outside to complete educational packets. Please keep students in your group. Please don’t hesitate to let Mrs. West or Mrs. Carrillo know if you are having trouble with a student following directions or misbehaving. We will take them out of your group and have them stay with us. It is very important that we respect the rules set by the rangers at the observatory. This trip is a privilege they have afforded us for free to enhance our curriculum. Students should use classroom manners.
Please have students use the restroom and wash for lunch at the observatory restrooms before boarding the van and bus.
12:30-12-45pm Board the van and the bus to leave for Coldwater Lake picnic area.
12:50-2:00pm We will picnic and explore the Coldwater Lake area. There are picnic tables at Coldwater Lake where we will eat lunch if weather permits. Mrs. West and I will have garbage bags for trash.
After lunch you and your students are free to walk the boardwalk at the lake and explore. Please make sure students stay on the paths provided. There is a $100.00 fine for leaving the trails. Students will be tempted to pick up sticks- please do not allow them to do so.
2:00pm Have students use the restrooms and board the bus and van for departure!
