September 8th- 12th What’s
Happening in Class?
·
North Cascades Institute
Notifications and permission slips for camp were sent home last week and
they are due tomorrow. We must have these completed and returned in order for
your student to attend Mountain School. Please let me know if you have questions
(dcarrillo@foundationcampus.org)
Also, please let me know if your student is unable to attend Mountain School as
we need to get a final count for billing purposes.
·
Spelling and Vocabulary
Spelling and Wordly Wise will begin on Wednesday 9/10 and will be due on
9/17. Spelling and Wordly Wise are assigned on a weekly basis. Tests are also
always on Wednesdays. Spelling tests are given once a week; Wordly Wise tests
are given every two weeks.
·
Reading
We will begin our novel study for Call
It Courage tomorrow during reading class. Typically all reading
assignments are completed in class so there isn’t much homework for this
subject. Last year we kept a count of the number of pages students read for a
grade; this year we will be logging genres read instead. In addition to our
novel studies, during Reader’s Workshop, students will be learning how to read
and interpret factual data represented in visual charts, diagrams, cross
sections, graphs, maps, etc.
·
Science
I will be teaching boys’ science on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternate
Fridays; however, girls’ will be covering the same subject matter with Mrs.
West. Our first nine week unit is on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other
natural disasters. We will be working on an interdisciplinary study that
integrates this unit into reading and writing as well.
·
Writer’s Workshop
During Writer’s Workshop students will be learning how to represent factual
information about our natural disasters unit through visual literacy such as
charts, diagrams, cross sections, graphs, maps, etc.
