Hello Sixth Grade Parents!
February 27, 2014
As you may know, the sixth graders are currently reading Bridge to Terabithia, by
Katherine Paterson. We are doing things
a little differently with the reading of this novel. Each student is receiving
a “pass” with activities to complete during the reading of the book. Students
have already completed two of the tasks, and they have four more tasks/activities
to complete.
Building a model of a
bridge is the latest activity the students were assigned. Students can work in
pairs or independently to build their model. I have suggested they use Popsicle
sticks to construct their models; however, since this is an engineering design
piece built into our unit, students are allowed to use other materials of their
choice. This Friday, February 28th, I am allowing students bring
materials to work on their models in class. I am not requesting that they bring
materials officially until Tuesday, March 4th. Students will be given three different class
periods to work on their bridges in class, any extra time required beyond this
will need to be completed at home. The bridge models will be due for presentation
on March 21st.
Students who collect all the stamps on their pass for
completion of their projects will be going on a field trip at the end of the
unit! We will be going on a short hike and viewing bridges in our area. The
fieldtrip is scheduled for Friday, March 28th. We will need a few
chaperones, please email me if you interested in coming along. (dcarrillo@foundationcampus.org)
Students will need to bring a sack lunch and snacks for the trip.
