Fifth Grade Language Arts

What’s Happening in Class?

·          Bible: We continue our study on Moses this week.
Psalms 46:1-3, 7
God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.
 7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress

·         Reading: The renaissance fair for Crispin, was a great success! The students were able to raise about $28.00 for our World Vision kids and about $70.00 for Mr. Sorrell! They should be very proud of themselves! Today we will begin reading our new novel, Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis. This is a realistic, historical fiction set in the era of the great depression.

·         Language Arts: We started our study of expository writing this past week. Over the next four weeks we will continue learning how to properly write expository paragraphs and research papers (short ones).
Please be aware if your student is in band, that it is possible that your student could be missing lessons involving writing. Band is currently scheduled at the same time we have writing for 5th grade. I have done everything possible to work around this conflict so students have not missed lessons in the past. With the new sports schedule coming into play, I have to place writing at 1:15 pm, right when we return from recess. This is also the same time band will meet. I will be placing the pages covered from the grammar book concerning the lesson on the blog for the day. It will be the responsibility of students and the family to go over material missed in class due to band and sports.

·         Spelling and Vocabulary:  Wordly Wise lesson 9 exercises D and E will be due on Wednesday, February 5th. The test for Wordly Wise lesson 9 will be this week on February 5th. Spelling homework lesson 16 and words 3x each will be due on February 5th. We will also have our spelling test on this day.

·          Science:  The boy’s science class of robotics is moving right along; a couple of the teams are already nearing the completion of their first robot build and preparing for the programming phase.
