What’s Happening in Class?
- · Bible: The first memory verse quiz for 5th grade will be this Wednesday, September 18th. The students will write the verse for their quiz. Our verse is, I Peter 2:17 “Show proper respect to everyone; Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the King.”
- · Reading: This week we start off in chapter 11 of The Tale of Despereaux. While I realize that many students may have read and be familiar with this novel, we are currently reading the novel while looking through a different set of lenses. While we read, we stop and discuss the novel from the perspective of an author. We are examining the book not only for the purpose of comprehension and enjoyment, but also the writer’s craft. My hope is to introduce students to skills and artistic craft that they will attempt in their own writing.
- · Language Arts: Students will be continuing to learn the structure and routine for Writer’s Workshop. This week we will begin the routine of writing conferences with the teacher and peers.
- · Spelling and Vocabulary: Students have been and will continue to learn how to complete Wordly Wise. The first few lessons I walk them through the lessons step by step until they begin to feel confident with completing the lessons on their own. Homework for both these subjects will be due Sept. 18th. Our second test on Spelling Lesson 2 will be on Wed., September 18th. The first Wordly Wise test will be on Wed., September 18th. After the lessons are completed, I will introduce the new lessons for the week ahead.
- · Science: I would like for the 5th and 6th grade boys (I teach the boys science) to start collecting small items from home that they think could be used for a part to make an animal robot…..More info to follow!
