Sixth Grade Language Arts March 13th-20th

Writer's Workshop
  • The students are continuing to enjoy writer's workshop each day. I have been holding conferences with them each day, listening to their stories and helping them individually with revision and editing their writings. This method is really helping students with their individual needs concerning grammar and punctuation. As time progresses I will be looking for evidence in the students' individual writings that they are implementing the grammar "pieces" discussed during our conferences.
  • There is no homework assigned outside of class this week for writing.
  • On Monday 3/18 students practiced typing "finished" pieces of writing in the computer lab during class.
Spelling and Vocabulary
  • Spelling lesson 23 was introduced on 3/13/13. Spelling lesson, words written in cursive 3x each will be due on Wednesday, 3/20.
  • No Wordly Wise homework again until 3/27/13.
Reading
  • We have completed reading Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, the final test will be Thursday, 3/14
  • Students have the final assignment that was given last week in class, due on Friday 3/15 (see last week's blog for details)
  • Next week (March 18-March 22) students will be selecting literature circles to join and reading with a group in class.
  • On Monday 3/18, students completed a final assignment for Roll of Thunder, on character development. Students who were absent can complete this assignment when they return to school.
Science
  • On Friday 3/15/13, we will have our unit test on chapter 11, Outer Space.
  • On Tuesday 3/19/13, we will start a new unit on cells.
  • On Tuesday 3/26/13 and Thursday 3/28/13, we will be constructing models of cells in class.
  • We have decided to do this in class rather than assign it as a homework assignment, in light of the fact that students are currently working on reports for history and science projects at home.
  • Students will have one week from 3/19-3/26 to gather and bring materials they will need to make their individual cell models in class on Tuesday 3/26 and Thursday 3/28.
  • Students should bring non-perishable items to make their cells because we want to display the models after they are constructed.
