Fifth Grade Language Arts March 6th-13th

Reading

  • Although we have finished our reading of Bud, Not Buddy, we will continue to discuss some of the themes introduced in this novel when we read our new novels this month. We have three new short novels to read this month written by Mildred Taylor. She is the Newberry award winner for Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.  These three short novels are the appropriate level for the fifth grade students to begin their discussions about the sensitive subject of discrimination.
  • No homework has been assigned for these novels as of yet.
Writer's Workshop

  • Writer's workshop is progressing very well! The students come excited and ready to write about their lives and experiences. That means it's a success!
  • I will be asking students to pick which writings they would like to show in their portfolios, which I will be sharing with you at conference time in April.
Spelling and Wordly Wise

  • On Wednesday 3/6, Spelling lesson 21 was introduced. The homework will be due on Wednesday 3/13.
  • Spelling test on lesson 21 will be on Wednesday 3/13.
  • There will be no more Wordly Wise lessons assigned again until Wednesday 3/27--- Please do not work ahead. Students who work ahead typically don't want to listen when I'm introducing the new lesson to the class, and they may miss things I want to point out.
Bible

  • We are beginning a study on Joshua and Caleb.
  • Our new memory verse is Joshua 1:7, the memory verse quiz for this will be on 3/13.

Science

  • On Tuesday 3/5, we read pages 263-271 in class together. Workbook pages 171,172 were assigned for homework. These will be due on Tuesday, 3/12.
  • On Thursday 3/7, Mrs. West will be introducing the materials and instructions for science projects during class. We want to get this information out early even though projects and science fair isn't until May. We want everyone to have plenty of time to conduct experiments and develop ideas for a quality project! This allows students approximately two months to complete their projects! Happy researching! :)
